Chief Joseph Olanipekun Popoola was born on August 13, 1923, in Ebete Quarters, Ejigan, in Efon Alaaye, Ekiti, Nigeria. His life's journey was marked by an unwavering commitment to education, service, and community development, earning him a place of respect and admiration.
Chief Popoola began his distinguished career in education when he started teaching at Saint Matthew’s Catholic School in Ondo. His passion and dedication to his work soon led to his appointment as the headmaster of Saint Stephen’s Catholic School in Owo. His leadership and vision in education were further recognized when he was appointed as the Catholic Supervisor in charge of schools across Owo, Akure, and Akoko regions.
In addition to his academic contributions, Chief Popoola was a talented athlete. He was a key member of the Akure Town Football Team, playing as a central half for many years. His competitive spirit and teamwork extended beyond the classroom and into his community.
In 1957, Chief Popoola furthered his education by traveling to the United Kingdom, where he completed his professional teacher’s certificate course. Upon returning to Nigeria, he continued his educational service as Catholic Supervisor before being appointed Senior Tutor at Saint Peter’s Training College, Akure. There, he taught English Language and the Principles of Education, shaping the minds of future educators.
Chief Popoola's dedication to education was culminated in his role as the Chief Inspector of Education for the Ondo State Ministry of Education, a position he held for many years before retiring in 1983. His career spanned several key locations including Akure, Ibadan, Osogbo, Ijero, and Ado-Ekiti, where he impacted countless students and colleagues with his wisdom, leadership, and integrity.
Beyond his professional life, Chief Popoola was deeply committed to his faith and his community. He was the Asiwaju of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Efon-Alaaye and the first chairman of Mary Queen of Angels Church in Akure. His Christian values, humanity, and generosity were evident in all aspects of his life. His cheerful disposition, thoughtfulness, and consideration for others were a source of inspiration for those who knew him.
Late Chief Mrs. Veronica Modupe Popoola was a revered matriarch, educator, and dedicated community member. Born in Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria on April 2, 1928, she spent her life nurturing her family and serving her community with exceptional devotion.
A passionate educator, Mrs. Popoola taught at Omorele Nursery and Primary School, Akure, Ondo State and later at St. Michael Primary School, Akure, Ondo State, leaving a lasting impact on countless students before her retirement.
Her deep faith was evident in her active participation in Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church. She was a valued member of the Catholic Christian Mothers’ Association, St. Louis Associate, and the Companion of Priests and Religious Association. She also served as the Matron of the Altar Servers, Choir, and Pages of the Blessed Sacrament, demonstrating her profound commitment to her faith and community.
Mrs. Popoola’s life was marked by her nurturing spirit, boundless love, and tireless service. She passed away on April 29, 2003, and was laid to rest in July 2003. Her legacy of faith, education, and service continues to inspire and be cherished by all who knew her.
